(2) Sustainable Development Goals of the UN

In September 2015, world leaders passed the sustainable development agenda during a historical UN summit. The agenda includes 17 “sustainable development goals” that focus on three areas: economical development, social development and environmental sustainability. These goals reflect on the desire of people all around the world to create a safe, energetic and sustainable world that will be free of poverty and hunger.

Therefore, in the next 15 years, every nation will be devoted to eradicate any form of poverty, achieve the goal of equality, boost the level of prosperity and protect planet earth while ensuring that “no one falls behind”. The Chinese government has constituted the <China’s Voluntary National Review of the Implementation of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development>.

Competition Requirements

The competition revolves around the UN’s “Sustainable Development Goals”, focusing on three goals: “Goal#2: Eradicate hunger”, “Goal#3: Good health and well-being”, and “Goal#4: High quality of education”. The purpose of this competition is to help “African children and women affected by AIDS”; each competing team can choose one of the goals and use creativity to design a project or propose specific plans that can help improve the nutrition, medical and education conditions of the African children and women that are affected by AIDS and poverty.

Project Types

To help the competing teams further understand the competition requirements, additional descriptions will be provided in regards to the three above-mentioned goals to guide the teams to design precise and feasible projects:

Goal #2

Eradicate hunger, improve nutrition

Fact:Sub-Saharan Africa is the most common area where hunger exists, a quarter of the population are suffering from malnutrition, and the malnutrition rate of sub-Saharan Africa between 2014 and 2016 was 23%; In the developing world, 66 million children went to school while starving, and Africa alone was accountable for 23 million of those children.

Goal of the UN: By 2030, eradicate hunger, ensure that everyone, especially the poor and minorities and babies, have enough safe and nutritious food supplies; eradicate any form of malnutrition, meet the nutritional demands of pregnant women and breastfeeding women.

Goal #3

Good health and well-being.

Fact:Every year, the number of deaths among children under the age of five still exceeds 6 million; the death ratios of children in the sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are rising, where four out of every five deaths are from the these two regions; the number of deaths of African children from poor families under the age of five is almost twice as much as the number of children born in wealthy families; AIDS is currently the main cause of death amongst African teenagers (10 to 19 years old).

Goal of the UN:By 2030, eradicate the number of preventable deaths of newborn and children under the age of five; achieve the UN’s “Three Zero Vision”, and eliminate AIDS.

Goal #4

High quality of education, learning opportunities

Fact: The number of children that dropped out of school from the developing regions is 57 million, and more than half of them come from the sub-Saharan Africa region; there are 103 million teenagers in the world that lack the basic reading and writing abilities, and 60% of them are females.

Goal of the UN:By 2030, ensure that all children have access to free, equal and high quality elementary and high school education and achieve effective academic results; ensure that all children receive high quality newborn development, nursing and preschool education; establish and improve education facilities to ensure gender equality and disabled equality; provide everyone with a safe, non-violent, tolerating and effective learning environment.

Implementation

Choose one of the three goals, and either design a business project, technological project or an online/offline fundraising plan through research and analysis.

Business Project

Through designing and finalizing a feasible business project, earn revenue and use the profits to support the above-mentioned people, senior teams are encouraged to think from a business perspective. For instance, designing and producing relevant products and sell them, cooperate with hypermarkets to create innovative specialty products, etc.

Technological Project

Research deeply into the dilemma of the African children and women who are affected by AIDS, design relevant products and projects that are not only executable, reproducible and marketable, but also use scientific methods or strategies to improve their lives.

Public Welfare Plan

Directly fundraise for African children and women that are affected by AIDS; target issues such as nutrition, education and medical, design online/offline fundraising plans and execute them.

Others

The organizing committee encourages new creative ideas. If there are plans or projects that aren’t covered in the above sections, feel free to make requests to the organizing committee.

Project Evaluation

This competition will use “Project plan”, “Advocacy” and “fundraising”as the three criteria to evaluate the competing teams’ projects; this will provide students with different specialties the opportunity to stand out.

  • Project Plan : Emphasizes on the ability to solve problems, the design has to be based on practical conditions in Africa; try to aim for simplicity and feasibility;
  • Advocacy : Examines the students’ leadership skills; While paying close attention to their project plans, every team has to use advocacy to get more people to pay attention to Africa;
  • Fundraising : Examines the students’ mobility, all teams are encouraged to launch fundraising events; the final fundraising amounts will be used as a part of the project evaluation.
